| Abstract: | Probing the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is expected to improve our un-
derstanding of the missing baryons and metals problem at the galactic scale. Galaxies
harbour a much smaller fraction of baryons than the expected value given by the cos-
mological ratio Ωb/Ωm . They are also seen to possess a fraction of the metals they produce
over their lifetime. Using a combination of HST /COS far-ultraviolet spectrum of a
background quasar and V LT /MUSE integral field spectroscopic data, we study the as-
trophysical origin of a high HI column density absorber at z ≈ 0.61 which seems to trace
the extended gaseous envelopes of more than one galaxy at that redshift. By modeling
the chemical and physical properties of the absorbing gas, and through comparisons of
the morphology, orientation, SFR, stellar masses, and kinematics of the galaxies with the
absorber properties, we present our conclusions on the most likely scenario responsible
for the absorption. |
